Wismec Active Kit | Review

Design7.5
Wismec Active Kit

The Active mod and Armor NS Plus tank is certainly an interesting and innovative kit from Wismec.

A vape device that can also act as a Bluetooth speaker, with both shock and water resistant capabilities.

The Active sports a complete chunky rubber sleeve that runs across the entire edges of the device. Then on either side are two metal housings for the speakers. The metal has a powder coat paint finish to it, which further adds to the whole rugged feel of the device.

The fire button and +/- buttons are on the front of the device and are rubber pressing through onto plastic underneath. The micro USB charge port is located just beneath these and has a rubber plug which slots into the port to cover and keep it water resistant.

The screen, also located on the front side of the device is a perfect size and nice and bright. It’s quite a basic display but does show all the necessary info from wattage, ohms to battery life.

At the top of the Wismec Active is the 510 connector which is offset towards the front side. It has a stainless steel surround and a gold-plated, spring-loaded positive pin.

On the top backside of the device, there’s a plastic hook which protrudes from the mod. This is to be used with the included carabiner clip so you can attach the device to a strap or belt loop.

Style

While I’m a little disappointed at how large and cumbersome the Active Kit is, I don’t actually mind the styling of it.

It’s perfectly in keeping with the audience it’s aimed for. The rugged rubber bumpers give you a sense of stability, and it’s still comfortable to hold. The buttons are still fine to press, although a little mushy, but that’s to be expected.

The grated panels for the speakers also suit the device, and all of the available colors look good. The mod comes in 3 different color options which are Solid Black, Black and Silver, and Black and Orange.

However, you also have the option to add a rubber outer protective sleeve which comes in the following colors; Blue Camo, Orange Camo, and Green Camo. All add a nice finishing touch. Personally, I prefer the black standard outer rubber.

Build Quality

Everything about the Wismec Active Kit is sturdy and rugged, from the 510 connection to the acrylic chamber of the Armor NS Pus tank.

I have no issues with any of the individual components of the mod or tank and think it has very good build quality for the style of device that it is.

However the same can’t be said for the build quality of the board inside, and it’s firing ability which I’ll discuss later.

Wismec Active Kit

Innovation

It certainly is innovative to have Bluetooth speaker incorporated into a vaping device.

While I’m not sure it’s ultimately something vapers have been screaming out for, I commend Wismec for trying something new.

Wismec Active Kit

Portability

For an Active kit with only a 2100mAh battery, the Wismec Active is not exactly portable and pocket-friendly.

The mod measures in at 94.5 x 55.6 x 26.6mm without the tank and weighs 166g.

Wismec goes someway to negate the portability issue with including a carabiner clip that attached to the plastic hook on the device. Personally, I don’t think I’d be comfortable hanging the Active Kit from my built loop, but then I’m not the target market.

Features8.0
Wismec Active Kit

The Active Mod has a range of 5-80w and a 2100mAh internal battery.

It has all the standard features expected and can work in VW, Bypass, TC-Ni, TC-Ti, TC-SS, and TCR modes.

Clicking the fire button three times enables you to scroll through each setting.

Bluetooth Speaker

The Wismec Active has designated Bluetooth controls on the back side of the mod, much like the other buttons these are mushy rubber buttons but are clearly labeled.

There’s a play/pause, volume +/-, skip track and power button.

To enter Bluetooth mode, you need to hold down the power button, and it will chime and say ‘Bluetooth Mode.’

Once you’ve paired with your device, which is a relatively simple process the controls can be used, but don’t expect them to work flawlessly with every device and application. I had a few issues trying to pause and resume music playing from Spotify on my Android device.

How does it sound?

Actually a lot better than I expected. Now I’m no audiophile, but I have used plenty of Bluetooth speakers in the past, and while I think the clarity is a little lacking compared to well-known brands, it’s perfectly acceptable.

The speaker does actually get incredibly loud, which is good and doesn’t distort too much at it’s loudest setting.

To be honest, I think it’s a better Bluetooth speaker than it is a vaping device, and that’s solely what I use mine for now…which is a real shame.

Tank7.0
Wismec Active Kit

The Armor NS Plus tank comes in either a 4.5ml or 2ml (TPD compliant) setup.

Instead of having a glass tube Wismec have gone with Acrylic to help protect against drops. The acrylic seems thick and strong, and I’ve not had any issues using very citrus juices.

The tank has an easy to use slide top fill system. There’s a small indicating arrow on the top of the tank, and it’s easy to slide open and close, with a large fill port.

The AFC control of the tank has chunky knurling making it easy to adjust, and it rotates smoothly with a stopper at each end. There are three air holes on either side of the tank; two are cyclops style holes and the other a small circular hole for MTL.

This is where the Amor Plus tank differs from a lot included with these style of devices, as it truly has designated airflow and coils for either direct to lung or mouth to lung style vaping.

The tank comes with both 0.2Ohm (DTL) and 1.3Ohm (MTL) coils.

Wismec Active Kit

Coils

WS01 Triple 0.2Ohm Coil (40-80w)
This is the direct-lung coil which I found works well at around 50W, but it will depend on the type of juice you are using.

Both vapor and flavor production is good with these coils, definitely acceptable for an included tank. However, I did notice the coil performance dropping off after a weeks use.

WS04 MTL 1.3Ohm Coil (8-14w)
This is the mouth-to-lung coil, which seemed to work well between 10 and 12W. It’s best to use less viscose juices with this type of coil, so I kept it at 50/50.

I had no issues with the wicking, again the flavor and vapor production were ok, but nothing too special. I do however feel these coils are far better suited to the tank and device, due to the low capacity and small 2100mAh battery.

Performance2.0
Wismec Active Kit

Not good.

It’s a standard Wismec board which should be more than fine for this type of mod. It doesn’t require any fancy bells and whistles; it just needs to work.

Unfortunately, Wismec hasn’t even managed to get that right with this device.

Basically, the device doesn’t fire everytime you hit the fire button. Sometimes it works fine, others it stops halfway through the vape leaving you with a frustrating choppy experience.

At first, I thought maybe it was the fire button needing to held hard to activate, but it’s not. Even pressing the ‘reset’ button didn’t correct any firing issues.

It may just be something with the early releases, or the device we have and maybe can be rectified with a firmware update. I really hope so because in its current state it’s barely usable without you getting frustrated and throwing it against a wall….but hey at least it’s shock resistant and won’t break when you do.

It must be noted that the tank and coil performance is fine and I’ve tested it on other devices and had no any complaints there. It’s not the best tank in the world, but fine for this device and good to have the options of a high and low ohm coil.

Wismec Active Kit

Battery Life

If you were solely going to use this a vaping device and with the MTL style coil, then battery life is fine.

However, if you plan on using it as both a Bluetooth speaker and vaping device, there is no way the battery will see you through a full day.

If you go with the low ohm coil at high wattage, then forget about using the Bluetooth functionality alongside it, as the 2100mAh battery will barely see you through a few hours.

It’s not good for such a large device to have such a small and insufficient battery.

Verdict

Wismec Active Kit

I have to take a step back and commend Wismec for trying something innovative for a vaping device.

While I’m not the perfect demographic for this type of device, I’m sure there are a few users out there that would like the ability to pump out tunes from their mod.

Still, I can’t help but think you are just better off purchasing a small budget Bluetooth speaker and a far better device for the same price.

The Wismec Active is aimed at those that are well…’Active’ with it’s waterproof and rugged shockproof design being good positives.

However, when it comes to its vaping abilities, it really is disappointing.

The constant non-firing has left me in a position where I really can not recommend this device, even if you are the type of vaper it’s aimed at.

But keep your eyes out on forums, maybe these issues will be rectified in future releases – we will update this review if that’s the case.
